In its May 27, 2004 report, the U.S. Surgeon General listed smoking as the leading preventablecause of death in the United States, impacting every bodily process and even damaging organsthat have no contact with the smoke itself. Additionally, the CDC estimates that smoking is responsiblefor one out of every five deaths in the United States. Each year, smoking costs the United Statesapproximately $157 billion in lost productivity and medical expenditures. Yet despite the researchthat lays out why smoking is the leading preventable health hazard in the U.S., approximately one outof every four American adults smoke cigarettes.
